Avenues for Success supports the healthy development of students by building strengths and meeting the needs of the whole child. Increased student achievement and reduction of risk-taking behavior are primary goals of the program. The three principal tenets of building relationships, creating supportive environments and connecting programs to the academic goals of Ohio are woven together to meet the academic and behavioral goals of the program.

Building Relationships

Creating Environments

Connecting Programs

Through a predictable schedule, a balance of active and quiet activities, structured lessons and student choices we cultivate a supportive environment. At the end of the day, when the students are less able to focus on structured activities, they have choices allowing for greater independence and the choices incorporate these assets:

  • Students are included in age-appropriate tasks and decisions and given useful roles at home and in the community.

  • Students learn to plan ahead and make choices at appropriate developmental levels.

  • Students begin to feel they have control over things that happen to them.

Through building relationships, creating supportive environments and connecting programs and practices that are instructionally sound , the "Avenues for Success" program is founded on a structure designed to meet the needs of students, promote achievement and reduce risk–taking behavior.

As stated, all of the academic components of the Avenues for Success program incorporate Ohio Academic Standards. In addition, the activities have been selected to incorporate a whole host of developmental assets including:

  • Parents are actively involved helping students succeed in school outside the home.

  • Adults have realistic expectations for students’ development. Parents, caregivers and other adults encourage students to achieve and develop their unique gifts.

  • Students can participate in music, art, drama, or other creative activities each week at home and elsewhere.

  • Students spend time each week in extracurricular school activities or structured community programs.

  • Students are motivated to do well in school and other activities.

  • Students are responsive, attentive and actively engaged in learning.

  • Parents and teachers encourage students to explore and engage in stimulating activities. Students do homework when it is assigned.

  • Students enjoy learning and care about their school.

  • Students and an adult read together for at least 30 minutes a day.  Students also enjoy reading or looking at books or magazines on their own.

Our "Success" Program

Building relationships promotes a sense of belonging for students and incorporate important developmental assets:

  • Students have support from adults other than their parents, and parents have support from people outside the home.

  • School and other activities provide caring, encouraging environments for students.

  • Parents and other adults model positive, responsible behavior.

  • Students interact with adults and students and can make friends.

  • Students try to resolve conflicts nonviolently.
